We decided to take a trip up the canyon. It was our first time this year and it was so much fun (as usual!) The kids had a great time throwing rocks in the river (sorry to anyone who was fishing down stream!!) We roasted some hot dogs, made s'mores and went for a little walk over the bridge. We will definitely be doing it again...as much as possible!
We have been going to lunch at the school this week and it is always a treat when I let the kids play at the playground for awhile after. It usually serves as a good bribe to get them to eat just a few more bites!
Alex is 5 now and this morning he told us he wanted to ride his bike without training wheels. Taun went out with him and he did it first try! He was so excited!!
ALEX is 5!! I can hardly believe that he is really that old. When he woke up this morning and saw the flag in our front yard he said; "Mom, will there always be a flag in our yard on my birthday? There was one last year too!". I guess that's what happens when you were born on Flag Day. We even got to go to the fireman parade today. He loved it!
Last week we learned all about caterpillars so I thought it was only appropriate to learn about butterflies this week. The kids were able to paint their own pot whichever color they wanted.
It is very important to wear your apron when you are painting so as not to get paint on your clothes! (It might also be good to just wear clothing that would be okay to get paint on it so that if you happen to make a mess, it won't matter!)
After we painted the pots, we played several games so that the pots could dry. The first thing we did was play with pattern blocks. We had a butterfly, a caterpillar, and a dragonfly. The kids had a blast with these blocks. We got all our patterns from here: http://prekinders.com/pattern-blocks/
After plenty of time with the pattern blocks, we read our story. This week's book was "From Caterpillar to Butterfly" by Deborah Heiligman. It is a cute little book about a classroom of children that has a caterpillar in a jar. They watch the caterpillar day by day as it changes into a butterfly.
Then we went outside to pretend that we were butterflies. We started out as eggs...
and then we hatched and became caterpillars crawling all over the grass and eating all the green!
We couldn't stop there! We HAD to know exactly what it feels like to hang upside down just like when the caterpillar is getting ready to make its chrysalis. (This just might have been the most favorite part of the whole day!!)
Then we practiced using our wings to "fly" all over the backyard.
We had pretzels for snack (because they look like butterflies!) Then we finished up our butterflies by gluing a black Styrofoam ball to the top with google eyes and pipe cleaner antenna. We also included some pipe cleaner arms (or legs), some rhinestone jewels to the bottom, and don't forget the sparkly foam wings!
On Saturday June 9th, McDonalds in Hyrum was having a summer reading kickoff party so we went. It was lots of fun! They were giving a free book to the 1st 100 kids and a free ice cream cone to the kids. When we first got there Gracie was a little nervous about the princess but we got a picture anyway. The boys were able to get their picture taken with the pirate. It was the perfect ending to a fun filled day!
There was also a kid/guy there who was making balloons for the kids. He was very talented! He made a flower for Gracie, a sword for Alex, and a rocket for Benjamin. Some of the other things I saw him make included: a monkey in a tree, an owl, a caterpillar, and a penguin.
Of course the kids had to play at the playhouse for awhile.
Saturday June 9th was Spiderman Day at Maceys. They started it by providing a FREE breakfast of bacon and eggs. They also had the new spiderman cereal for us to try. After breakfast they had a few simple activities for the kids in The Little Theater. There was a coloring contest, fruit snacks, and each kid made their own spiderman mask.
I am a very busy mother of three boys and one girl, and the wife of an amazing husband. I teach preschool from my home and I am enjoying life...even with all the trials it brings.
